Special Services

Welcome to the Glenburn School Special Services Department!

The Glenburn School Department is a Pre-K to 8 School with approximately 385 students. There are an additional 160 high school students who have the benefit of school choice and attend many area schools such as Bangor High School, Brewer High School, John Bapst High School, Hampden Academy, Hermon High, and Orono High School. The school choice option provides our students with access to a wide variety of academic programs and extracurricular activities depending upon a student’s individual interests, educational needs, and post-secondary goals.

Currently, we have a K-2, 3-5 and 6-8 resource room program for students who need specially designed instruction in reading, writing, and math. We also offer an extended school year program for 4 weeks in July so students can maintain their skills over the summer.

We have a comprehensive life skills program for students working on functional skills and accessing the community. Students participate in many community outreach opportunities and participate in a wide variety of educational field trips. Most recently students visited Acadia National Park and met with a park ranger. They learned about the fishing industry, tourism, ocean pollution, and its impact on marine life.

We work in close partnership with parents, community case managers, and other providers to develop, support, and implement a comprehensive educational program to serve your child. We believe in educating students as closely to their nondisabled peers as possible while we address areas of need through specialized instruction.

If students require a more staff-intensive placement we work with local day treatment programs like Bangor Regional Program, Stillwater Academy, and KidsPeace.

The Director of Special Services is responsible for all students on IEPs and 504 plans  K-12 and will facilitate high school team meetings to ensure effective coordination of special education and related services.

Parents or guardians who suspect their child may have a disability that may require special education and related services under the Individuals with Disabilities Act or reasonable accommodations under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act should contact the Special Services Director to initiate a referral and schedule a meeting.

Please feel free to reach out to meet me if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Kimberly Bennett, M.Ed., C.A.S.
